Have you ever been interested in Mosaics – the art consisting of a design made of small pieces of colored stone or glass? What! Never! Then the mosaics of East village are a must treat for your eyes, soul and ever curious mind. The great-looking sets of mosaic that adorn East Village are the brilliant master pieces by an exceptionally talented artist called Jim Power. He was a devotee to public art and loved it very much. He always tried infusing the East Village landscape with the beauty and color that reflect the mood of every place these mosaics are situated at. His 25 years’ hard work is evident in the form of seventy different light posts.

However, 50 of his works were removed during the 1990s. This action was taken by the government to tidy up the New York City and to give it a much neater look. The great artist is a Vietnamese veteran who was often homeless for many years. Many of the light-post work by him were approved by the Transportation Department of New York. Many remarkable mosaics can be found in and around Astor Place.


Jim Power is loved by many in the East Village community. Selective information about him can be found from many online sources. Mr. Power's art forms runs along East 8th Street from Broadway, via the Astor Place, all around the Cooper Square in front of Cooper Union and St. Mark's Place, from Third Avenue to Avenue A, down Avenue A to East 4th Street, up East 4th Street to Bowery and back to the cube on East 8th street.
