East Village in Manhattan NY is where the punk rock was born in late 1970s. The name "The East Village" was given by artists, musicians, writers, performers, and political radicals who came here in 1960s. It was considered the part of Lower East Side, once a home to German, Italian, Irish and Eastern European. Jewish immigrants lent their lands to chic boutiques, world class restaurants, bars and institutions which symbolize the Lower East Side culture. Now the artists are gone and today’s elegant young crowd call East village their "home". The East Village once had a status of being a very bad neighborhood however now the neighborhood is being gentrified and rents are rising due to maximum footfall in the area. Today tourists do not overlook this area.
There are many tourist attractions like St. Mark's Place (East 8th Street), lined with bars, restaurants and shops. It is a popular slip for tourists to visit. A walk through Tompkins Square Park, the dog shows and bongo drums in Avenue B are few tourist attractions. In Tompkin Square Park is the famous landmark honoring Joe Strummer Mural, one of the icons of punk rock. The historical attractions includes Mercury Lounge on Houston- the last remaining site for rock ‘n’ roll; Saint Brigid's Church; the saunas with old world platza treatment at Russian and Turkish Baths and at last General Slocum Monument-which commemorates the sinking of the General Slocum steamship.
